- 2020 WMCPGA Special Award Winners
Congratulations to our 2020 Special Award Winners! We are grateful to have such great golf professionals represent the PGA and grow the game in Western Montana. These professionals truly deserve recognition for their outstanding efforts during this challenging year.
Golf Professional of the Year — Dudley Beard, Meadow Lark CC
Dudley has served the chapter on numerous occasions throughout his 34-year career of being a Head Professional. Dudley’s passion is teaching and reaching his customers by making things easier and enjoyable while treating everyone with respect. His stated goal is providing an opportunity to give golfers “their best day ever”.
Assistant Professional of the Year — Steven Williams, Iron Horse GC
Steven was instrumental in the transition for a new Director of Golf, who has given him increased responsibilities and encouraged him to complete his college degree. He had record sales, instituted a new electronic tee sheet/POS and doubled his lesson income from 2019. He also serves as the Chapter Rules and Assistants Chairs.
Teacher of the Year — Christine Newton, Whitefish Lake GC
Christine has established herself as one of the premier teachers in the Western Montana Chapter. The amount of lessons and programing she is able to squeeze into their 5-month season is truly impressive and requires a healthy amount of planning and an even healthier amount of dedication to follow through.
Player Development Award — Lyndsie Sebby, Whitefish Lake GC
Lyndsie has a solid approach to retaining golfers and growing the game. She targets the junior, beginner and women’s golf market. Her programs are progressive and lead students from one step to another in the evolution of their golf game. Her attention to detail to and preparedness help define a clear vision to take the next steps and retain her base.
Youth Player Development Award — Ryan Cutter, Green Meadow CC
Ryan is an enthusiastic teacher and is experiencing rapid growth in all his youth player development programs. He has been able to grow his PGA Junior League participation from 26 kids to 75 kids and is now offering twice-a-week clinics during the season.
Bill Strausbaugh Award — Chris Nowlen, Missoula CC
Chris takes an active role in mentoring his staff, making the effort to check in with them regularly instead of waiting for them to seek him out. Chris has become the go-to resource for professionals in the chapter with regards to career services and enhancement. He is currently the VP of the PNW PGA and has ascended through the officer’s chairs of the chapter twice. Chris is active in his community, serving on the Missoula Education Foundation Board and active in Rotary International. Chris also volunteers at the Bitterroot Special Olympics Games and is active in their fundraising event at Hamilton Golf Club.
Player of the Year — Chad Carlson, Green Meadow CC
Chad played in 10 Pro-Ams, of which he won or tied for first in five of them. He placed 3rd at the WMC Match Play, 3rd at WMC Chapter Championship, and participated in the PNW PGA Professional Championship at Canyon River GC.
Merchandiser of the Year – Public — Mark Fenech, Indian Springs Ranch
Despite rounds being cut in half this year due to the pandemic, Mark has increased his dollars per round. He found creative ways to increase his margins due to freight and embroidery errors. His creative Christmas displays include stuffed stockings by the fireplace, pre-filled gift baskets, and discounted Christmas bundles for the upcoming season that include F&B
Merchandiser of the Year – Private — Gary Nye, Stock Farm Club
Even with the pandemic, Gary Nye has grown his operation slightly over the past year. He brought in three different fitting systems this year, significantly increasing hard good sales. He also successfully created a successful online shopping experience.
Merchandiser of the Year – Resort — Mikal Harpster, Fairmont Hot Springs Resort
Mikal has grown his golf shop operation in 2020. His gross sales have improved as well as his dollars per round. The new logo he helped design has been a huge hit, bringing much praise as well as increased soft good sales.
